Being Mindful of Myopia

Studies show that myopia is increasing in the United States. Better known as nearsightedness, myopia is a refractive error that makes long-distance vision blurry. It occurs when the eye changes shape, preventing light from reaching the retina properly. This can be the product of an eye that is too long or a curvature of the cornea that is too steep.

Our optometry clinic puts extra care into identifying myopia in your child. Most major changes in the eye occur between the ages of 6 and 18, so myopia is an area we focus on during a children’s eye exam.

Causes & Symptoms of Myopia

Since nearsightedness results in weak long-distance vision, the most obvious sign of myopia is blurry distant objects. But other more subtle signs can include:

  • Constant squinting
  • Perpetual headaches and eye fatigue
  • Eye pain

Correcting Myopia Carefully

There is no cure for myopia, and we can’t fully stop it from occurring. But there are several ways to mitigate its effects and slow its development. Comprehensive eye exams at 2020 EyeCare include a full survey of your child’s eyes’ shape and the curvature of their cornea.

Depending on your child’s age and the severity of myopia, we can suggest several eye care strategies.

Special contact lenses can provide a corrective solution for myopia. Although they require additional testing and fitting, the right contacts can slow down myopia progression, too. 2020 EyeCare offers CooperVision MiSight Contact Lenses, which are specially designed for children with myopia.

These lenses not only correct nearsightedness but control myopia in young people. Part of the lens accounts for a refractive correction, like any prescription contact. But an added feature of this technology is the use of concentric rings within the contact lens to focus light at the right place on the retina. This can reduce the progress of myopia development.

Some manufacturers have developed spectacle lenses that aim to slow down myopia, as well as correcting refractive errors. Certain studies have shown less myopia progression with the use of specialty myopia controlling eyeglass lenses. Our eye care team can inform you of recommended options during a lens selection and frame fitting.
